Though they may try, history is not easily erased, so long as it reverberates in the blood, the skin, and the spaces we claim. A visual interrogation of Black American and Filipina American identity, anti-colonialism, religion, gender, and the politics of aesthetics, Echoes brings together two sister projects: Slave descendant and head hunters.
These projects challenge the sterile gaze of purity culture and navigate the friction between what is imposed on us and what we fiercely preserve. Through Head Hunters, the romanticized western caricature of the “noble savage” is stripped away and rebuilt with the attempt to reclaim the power of the indigenous gaze. Through Slave Descendant, the brilliant, high-contrast and textured pulse of Black expression is celebrated for its perpetual resistance by existence alone. Together, these works reject simplification, celebrating the complex, heavy, and colorful truth of survival and reclamation, and the echoes they leave behind.
